UIC Snaps Valpo’s Streak in Four-Set Win

by: Michael Sanders

VALPARAISO, Ind. — The energy inside the Athletics-Recreation Center felt heavy Tuesday night. Valparaiso came in riding a six-match win streak, but UIC walked in ready to end it. The Flames did exactly that, grinding out a four-set victory to move to 12-7 overall and 6-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Antonie Kelnárová took control from the start, leading the charge with 18 kills and 19 digs in one of her most complete outings of the season. Julieta Sandez, the steady senior presence at the net, added 12 kills and five blocks, while Ayat Amin, fresh off her MVC Player of the Week honor, kept her momentum going with 11 kills to round out UIC’s balanced attack.

The Flames came out sharp, finding their rhythm early and setting the tone on defense. Even when Valpo pushed back in the middle sets, UIC’s poise never faded. Each rally felt like a response — smart, composed, and full of energy.

When the final point dropped, the team huddled together knowing they had just taken down one of the hottest programs in the conference. It was a win that spoke to UIC’s growth, depth, and ability to finish under pressure.

Final: UIC 3, Valparaiso 1

Takeaway: The Flames are finding their identity as a team that thrives in big moments. Kelnárová was electric, Sandez and Amin brought the balance, and UIC left Valpo with a statement win that showed this group is ready for more.
